PPI Letters & Responses

Received a Potentially Prejudicial Information Letter?

A PPI letter from Immigration New Zealand means they have information that could result in your visa being refused or cancelled — and they are giving you a chance to respond before they decide. How you respond could determine whether your visa is approved or declined. Do not ignore it.

Act immediately. PPI letters typically give you 14 to 28 days to respond. If you miss the deadline or submit a poor response, INZ can proceed to decline your visa without further notice. Contact us as soon as you receive one.

What Is a PPI Letter?

Understanding Potentially Prejudicial Information

Under the Immigration Act 2009, Immigration New Zealand has a legal obligation to give you an opportunity to comment on information that could negatively affect your visa application — before they make a final decision. This is called a Potentially Prejudicial Information (PPI) notice.

Receiving a PPI letter is not a refusal — it is a warning and an opportunity. It means INZ has specific concerns and wants your response before proceeding. A well-prepared, evidence-backed response can directly address those concerns and result in your visa being approved. A poor response — or no response — almost always leads to a decline.

Common Reasons

What Issues Trigger a PPI Letter?

INZ sends PPI letters across a wide range of visa types and situations. Understanding the concern is essential to responding effectively.

Criminal History

A conviction or police record — in New Zealand or overseas — that raises character concerns under the Immigration Act. INZ will outline the conviction and ask you to explain why your visa should still be granted.

Get Help
Relationship Doubts

For partnership visas, INZ may have concerns about whether your relationship is genuine. A PPI letter will specify what they are not satisfied with — and your response must provide targeted evidence to address each point.

Get Help
Employment & Salary Verification

INZ may question whether your job offer is genuine, whether your employer is paying the correct rate, or whether the role meets the requirements for your visa category. Evidence from your employer is critical.

Get Help
Previous Immigration History

Overstays, visa condition breaches, or previous declined applications — in New Zealand or other countries — can trigger a PPI letter. A clear, honest explanation supported by evidence is essential.

Get Help
Health Concerns

If a medical assessment raises issues around health thresholds or public health risk, INZ may issue a PPI. Medical reports, specialist assessments, or further evidence of treatment may be required in response.

Get Help
Inconsistent or Missing Information

Discrepancies between documents, gaps in employment history, inconsistent travel records, or information INZ has obtained that conflicts with your application can all lead to a PPI letter.

Get Help
Skills & Qualifications

INZ may question whether your qualifications are genuine, properly assessed, or relevant to the role claimed. Evidence from NZQA or your qualification-issuing body may be needed to resolve the concern.

Get Help
Sponsor or Employer Concerns

Issues with your sponsoring employer — such as accreditation problems, complaints, or compliance history — can trigger a PPI even if your own application is in order. We help you navigate this carefully.

Get Help
Fraud or Misrepresentation Allegations

If INZ suspects documents are fraudulent or information was deliberately misleading, a PPI letter is the formal opportunity to refute those concerns before a potentially serious decision is made against you.

What Makes a Strong PPI Response?

A PPI response is not just about submitting documents — it is about directly addressing every concern INZ has raised, in their own terms, with targeted evidence that leaves no doubt in the officer's mind.

INZ officers make decisions based on what is in front of them. A response that drifts into unrelated territory, leaves questions unanswered, or submits irrelevant documents is likely to fail. Every line of your response should be purposeful.

Our advisers read the PPI letter carefully, identify every issue raised, and build a response that addresses each one head-on — with the right evidence, in the right format, within the deadline.

Get Help With Your Response

A Strong PPI Response Includes:

  • A point-by-point written submission

Addressing each INZ concern directly, clearly, and in order — leaving nothing unanswered.

  • Targeted supporting evidence

Documents, records, and statements that specifically address each issue raised — not generic information.

  • Honest and consistent explanations

Where there is a genuine issue in your background, explaining it honestly — with context — is far better than avoiding it.

  • Character or support references

Letters from employers, community leaders, or others who can speak to your character and circumstances where relevant.

  • Submitted before the deadline

A late response may not be considered at all. We track every deadline and ensure your response is submitted on time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Just received a PPI letter? Contact us immediately — the sooner we can help, the stronger your response will be.

Ask an Adviser

No — a PPI letter is not a refusal. It is a formal notification that INZ has concerns, and they are legally required to give you an opportunity to respond before making a decision. Many applicants who receive PPI letters still have their visas approved — but only if they respond effectively with the right evidence and explanation.

The deadline is stated in the PPI letter itself — typically between 14 and 28 days from the date of the letter. In some cases an extension may be granted if you request it promptly and have good reason. Do not wait — contact us as soon as you receive the letter so we have maximum time to prepare your response.

You can — but a poorly prepared response is one of the most common reasons visas are declined at this stage. INZ officers make decisions based on what is submitted. Missing a concern, submitting unhelpful documents, or providing an explanation that raises more questions than it answers can all lead to a refusal that could have been avoided. Professional advice significantly improves your outcome.

Contact us immediately. In some cases we can request a deadline extension from INZ — but this must be done before the deadline expires and requires a valid reason. We can also advise on what alternative evidence might satisfy INZ's concerns if the primary evidence is unavailable, and ensure your submission explains any gaps clearly.

If you do not respond by the deadline, INZ can and usually will proceed to make a decision based on the information they already have — which triggered the PPI letter in the first place. In almost all cases, this means your application will be declined. Ignoring a PPI letter is the worst possible response.

Depending on the visa type and the grounds for refusal, options may include a formal appeal to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal, an INZ reconsideration (if new evidence is available), Ministerial intervention, or a fresh application on different grounds. Contact us — we will assess the refusal and advise on the strongest pathway forward.
