Applying for a Student Visa While in New Zealand
An onshore student visa is for people who are already in New Zealand — on a visitor visa, work visa, or another temporary visa — and wish to enrol in a course of study. Unlike an offshore application, you apply without leaving the country. But there are important eligibility conditions and timing rules that must be met.
Already in New Zealand
You must be physically present in New Zealand at the time of lodging your application. You apply from within the country rather than from overseas.
Must Hold a Valid Visa
You must hold a current valid visa at the time of application. Applying after your visa has expired makes you unlawfully in New Zealand, which can affect your eligibility and future applications.
Enrolment at a Registered Provider
You must be enrolled full-time at a New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission registered provider or an approved secondary school before you can apply.
Visa Conditions Must Permit Study
Some visa types do not allow you to study in New Zealand without first obtaining a student visa. If your current visa prohibits study, you must apply before starting any course.
Work Rights Possible
Depending on your study level and institution, your onshore student visa may include part-time work rights during term and full-time work rights during scheduled breaks.
Variation of Conditions Option
In some cases, if your current visa allows limited study, you may only need a variation of conditions rather than a full new student visa. We can advise which applies to your situation.
Do Not Wait Until Your Visa Expires
Timing is critical for onshore student visa applications. If you apply before your current visa expires, you may be allowed to remain lawfully in New Zealand while your application is being processed. If you let your visa lapse, the consequences can be serious.
⚠ Apply before your current visa expires. Being unlawfully in New Zealand — even briefly — can result in your student visa being declined, a stand-down period preventing re-entry, and complications for future immigration applications. If you are unsure of your visa expiry date or status, contact us immediately.
What You Will Need to Apply
Documents required for an onshore student visa are similar to an offshore application, with a few key differences relating to your current New Zealand visa status.
Valid Passport
Must be valid for the full duration of your intended study and at least three months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand.
Current Valid Visa
Evidence of your current lawful status in New Zealand — visitor visa, work visa, or other temporary visa still within its validity period.
Offer of Place
A confirmed enrolment offer from a New Zealand registered education provider showing your course, start date, and full duration of study.
Proof of Funds
Bank statements or evidence of financial support showing you can cover tuition fees, living costs, and return travel for the full period of study.
Medical Certificate (if required)
If your study is longer than 12 months, or if you did not provide a medical certificate with a recent prior visa, INZ may require one from an approved physician.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive medical and travel insurance for the duration of your studies is strongly recommended and may be required by your education provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am on a visitor visa. Can I apply for a student visa without leaving New Zealand?
Yes, in most cases. If your visitor visa is still valid and you have an offer of enrolment from a registered provider, you can apply for an onshore student visa without departing New Zealand. We recommend applying as early as possible to avoid any gap in lawful status.
Can I study while my onshore student visa application is being processed?
If you applied before your current visa expired, you may be covered by an interim visa while your application is processed, which can allow you to continue lawful activities. The conditions of an interim visa vary — contact us to confirm what applies in your situation.
My visa expired last week. Can I still apply onshore?
This is a serious situation. Being unlawfully in New Zealand affects your eligibility for an onshore student visa and can result in stand-down periods or removal. Contact us immediately — the sooner you act, the more options may be available to you.
Can I work while my student visa application is being processed?
Work rights during processing depend on the conditions of your current or interim visa. Do not assume you can work just because you have lodged an application. We will confirm exactly what you are and are not permitted to do during processing.
How long does an onshore student visa application take?
Processing times vary. INZ aims to process most onshore student visa applications within four to eight weeks, but this can be longer during busy periods. Applying well before your course start date and your current visa expiry is strongly recommended.
What if I want to change courses or providers during my studies?
Changing your course or education provider may require a variation of conditions on your student visa, or a new application altogether. Notify us before making any change — acting without updating your visa conditions can put your status at risk.
