What You Need

What You’ll Need to Prove

Partnership visa applications require strong evidence of a genuine and stable relationship. INZ assesses several key factors:

Genuine Relationship: De facto 12+ months, civil union, or marriage certificate

Cohabitation Evidence: Joint lease, shared bills, bank statements at the same address

Statutory Declarations: Statements from both partners and supporting witnesses

Photos & Communication: Evidence of your life together — photos, travel, messages

Character & Health: Police certificates and medical checks where required

Partner’s NZ Status: Proof your partner is a NZ citizen, resident, or valid visa holder

Common Pitfalls

Why Applications Fail

Partnership visas are among the most document-intensive applications. These are the most common reasons for decline:

Insufficient evidence of genuine, stable cohabitation

Relationship duration less than 12 months without exceptional circumstances

Statutory declarations that are vague or unsupported by objective evidence

Prior immigration history issues left unexplained in the application

Our advisers ensure your application tells a clear, consistent story backed by strong evidence — the first time.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do we need to be married to apply?

No. New Zealand recognises de facto (cohabiting) relationships, civil unions, and marriages. For de facto relationships, you generally need to have lived together for at least 12 months.

What if we’ve been together less than 12 months?

In some circumstances — such as having a child together or other exceptional factors — you may still be eligible. We assess each situation individually and advise the best pathway available.

Can I work in New Zealand on a partnership visa?

Yes. Most partnership visa holders receive an open work visa condition, allowing them to work for any employer in any role in New Zealand.

How long does a partnership visa last?

This depends on the visa type and your partner’s status. Partnership-based temporary visas are typically granted for 12–24 months, after which you may be eligible to apply for residence.

Can I include my children in the application?

Dependent children under 24 who are unmarried and financially dependent on you may be included or apply separately. We’ll advise the best approach for your family situation.
