What It Is

One Visa. Multiple Courses. Your Full Study Plan Covered.

A Pathway Student Visa is designed for international students who are enrolled in two or more consecutive courses in New Zealand. Instead of applying for a new visa every time you move to the next stage of your studies, a single pathway visa covers the entire sequence — saving time, money, and stress.

Two or More Consecutive Courses

You must be enrolled in at least two courses that follow on from each other. The courses can be with the same provider or different providers, as long as they form a logical study sequence.

Single Application, Longer Duration

Your visa is granted for the full length of your pathway — up to five years. You do not need to re-apply between courses, which reduces disruption and administrative burden.

Foundation to Degree Pathways

Common pathways include foundation programme to diploma, diploma to bachelor degree, or postgraduate certificate to master’s. Any combination of registered courses can qualify.

Work Rights Included

If your final qualification is at degree level or above, your Pathway Student Visa will typically include part-time work rights during term and full-time work rights during scheduled holidays.

Partner and Family

If your pathway leads to a postgraduate qualification, your partner may be eligible for an open work visa and your dependent children may be able to study at a New Zealand state school.

Offshore or Onshore

You can apply for a Pathway Student Visa from overseas before you travel, or from within New Zealand if you are already here on a valid visa and have confirmed enrolments in place.

Requirements

What You Will Need to Apply

A Pathway Student Visa application requires evidence for all courses in your pathway, not just the first one. Getting this right upfront avoids delays.

Valid Passport

Must be valid for the full duration of your pathway and at least three months beyond your planned departure from New Zealand.

Offers of Place for All Courses

Confirmed enrolment offers from all providers in your pathway, showing each course, start date, and duration. Conditional offers may be accepted in some cases.

Proof of Funds

Evidence that you can cover tuition fees and living costs for the entire pathway duration — not just the first course. This can include bank statements, scholarships, or sponsor letters.

Medical Certificate

Required for most pathway visa applicants as the total duration typically exceeds 12 months. Must be completed by an INZ-approved physician.

Police Certificate

A character certificate from your home country and any country where you have lived for 12 months or more in the past 10 years.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive medical and travel insurance for the full duration of your stay. Some education providers require proof of insurance before confirming enrolment.

The Process

How We Help You Plan and Apply

Pathway visas require more upfront planning than a standard student visa. We help you structure your study plan and build an application that gives you the best chance of approval.

1

Study Pathway Review

We review your intended courses and providers to confirm they form a valid pathway under INZ’s criteria, and advise on any adjustments needed to maximise your work rights and post-study options.

2

Document Preparation

We prepare a comprehensive document checklist covering all courses in your pathway and review every piece of evidence before lodgement — including enrolment offers, financial proof, and medical certificates.

3

Application Lodgement

We submit your Pathway Student Visa application through INZ’s online portal and manage all correspondence, including any requests for additional information during processing.

4

Ongoing Support Throughout Your Studies

We remain available throughout your pathway for any visa condition questions, changes in study plans, or advice on post-study work and residency pathways when you graduate.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum duration of a Pathway Student Visa?

A Pathway Student Visa can be granted for up to five years, covering the full duration of your study pathway. If your pathway exceeds five years, you will need to apply for an extension or a new visa before the current one expires.

Do all my courses need to be confirmed before I apply?

Ideally yes. INZ generally requires confirmed offers of place for all courses in your pathway. In some cases, conditional offers for later courses may be accepted, but unconditional enrolment for at least the first course is always required. We advise on what documentation is acceptable in your specific case.

What if I want to change one of my courses after my visa is granted?

Changing a course within your approved pathway may require a variation of conditions. Changing to a course outside your pathway could require a new visa application. Always contact us before making any changes — acting without updating your visa can put your status at risk.

Is a Pathway Student Visa better than applying for each course separately?

For most students, yes. A pathway visa means fewer applications, lower overall costs, and continuous lawful status throughout your studies. It also demonstrates to INZ that you have a clear, committed study plan — which can strengthen your application overall.

Can an English language course be included in my pathway?

Yes. An English language or foundation English course can be the first step in your pathway, provided it leads into a substantive qualification. Work rights during the English language portion of your pathway will depend on the overall pathway structure.

Will I get work rights from the start of my pathway?

Work rights under a Pathway Student Visa depend on the level of the final qualification in your pathway. If your pathway leads to a degree or higher, you will typically have part-time work rights throughout — including during preparatory courses at the start. We confirm work conditions for your specific pathway before you apply.
