When to Renew

Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute

Your student visa renewal application must be lodged before your current visa expires. If you apply in time, an interim visa keeps you lawfully in New Zealand while your renewal is processed. Miss the deadline, and you may become unlawful — with serious consequences for your studies and future visa applications.

⚠ Apply at least 6 to 8 weeks before your visa expires. Processing times vary and INZ can request additional information at any time. Leaving it too late risks a gap in your lawful status, which can affect your ability to work, study, and apply for future visas.

Common Reasons to Renew

Why Students Need a Renewal

Student visas are granted for a specific period. If your studies continue beyond that period, you need a renewal. Here are the most common situations where a renewal is required.

Course Extended or Lengthened

Your programme has taken longer than originally planned — due to additional papers, a failed paper that needs repeating, or a change in study load.

Moving to the Next Qualification

You have completed one qualification and are continuing to a higher level — for example, from a bachelor degree to a master’s — and were not on a Pathway Student Visa.

Changing Education Provider

You have transferred to a different institution or course that was not covered by your original student visa, requiring updated visa conditions.

Original Visa Issued for a Short Period

Your initial student visa was granted for less than the full duration of your course and now needs to be renewed to cover the remaining study period.

Deferral or Leave of Absence

You took an approved break from your studies and your visa expired during that period. You now need to renew before resuming your course.

Work Rights Update Needed

Your current visa does not include work rights, but you are now eligible — for example, because you have progressed to a degree-level programme.

Requirements

What You Will Need for Your Renewal

A student visa renewal is assessed against the same criteria as a new application. You must demonstrate that your circumstances still meet INZ’s requirements.

Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid beyond the end date of the visa you are applying for. Renew your passport first if it is due to expire soon.

Updated Enrolment Evidence

A current enrolment confirmation or updated offer of place from your education provider showing your ongoing or new course details.

Proof of Academic Progress

INZ may require evidence that you are making satisfactory academic progress — such as transcripts or a letter from your institution confirming your standing.

Proof of Funds

Updated financial evidence showing you can still cover tuition and living costs for the remaining period of your studies.

Medical Certificate (if required)

A new medical certificate may be required if your previous one has expired or if INZ requests updated health information.

Current Visa Evidence

Details of your existing student visa, including the visa label or electronic visa record, to confirm your current lawful status at the time of application.

The Process

How We Handle Your Renewal

We manage your renewal from start to finish — so you can stay focused on your studies without the stress of visa paperwork.

1

Expiry Date & Eligibility Check

We confirm your current visa expiry date, review your academic situation, and identify the right renewal pathway — including whether a variation of conditions or a full new visa application is required.

2

Document Preparation

We gather your updated enrolment evidence, academic records, financial proof, and any other required documents — reviewing everything before submission.

3

Application Lodgement

We submit your renewal application through INZ’s online portal well before your visa expiry and manage all follow-up correspondence with INZ during processing.

4

Renewal Confirmed

Once your new visa is granted, we confirm the conditions with you — including work rights, study conditions, and your next renewal date if applicable.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep studying while my renewal is being processed?

If you applied before your current visa expired, you are covered by an interim visa while INZ processes your renewal. An interim visa generally allows you to continue your current lawful activities — including studying and, if your previous visa included work rights, working. We confirm the exact conditions that apply to your interim visa.

What happens if I miss my visa expiry date?

If your visa has already expired, you are unlawfully in New Zealand. This can affect your ability to obtain a new visa, trigger a stand-down period preventing re-entry, and create complications for future immigration applications. Contact us immediately — the sooner you act, the more options may be available.

Will INZ check my academic results as part of the renewal?

Yes. INZ may request evidence of satisfactory academic progress. If you have failed papers or taken a leave of absence, this does not automatically mean your renewal will be declined — but it needs to be addressed carefully in the application. We advise on how to present your situation accurately and effectively.

Can I add work rights to my visa during a renewal?

Yes, if you are now eligible. For example, if you have progressed to a degree-level programme at a New Zealand university, your renewal may include part-time work rights during term and full-time work rights during scheduled holidays. We confirm what you qualify for before lodging.

My passport is expiring soon. Do I need to renew it before applying?

Your student visa cannot be granted for a period beyond your passport’s expiry date. If your passport expires before your course ends, renew your passport first — then apply for your student visa renewal. We factor this into your renewal timeline.

How far in advance should I start my renewal?

We recommend starting the renewal process at least 8 weeks before your visa expires. This gives enough time to gather documents, get any required medical certificates, and lodge the application well before the deadline. Contact us as soon as you know your studies are continuing.
