What Is It

Who Qualifies as an Exchange Student?

Exchange students are young people who travel to New Zealand to study and live with a host family as part of an approved cultural or educational exchange programme. This is different from a standard student visa and comes with specific eligibility rules.

Approved Exchange Programme

You must be participating in an exchange programme approved by the New Zealand government. Common providers include AFS, Rotary Youth Exchange, and YFU.

Aged 15 to 18

Exchange student visas are generally available to secondary school-aged students. Most programmes accept students aged 15 to 18 at the time of travel.

Host Family Placement

Exchange students live with a New Zealand host family arranged by the exchange organisation. A confirmed placement is typically required before a visa is granted.

State School Enrolment

Most exchange students attend a New Zealand state secondary school for the duration of their stay, usually one academic year or one semester.

Duration Up to 12 Months

Exchange student visas are granted for the length of the programme, typically between three and twelve months. Extensions beyond 12 months are not usually available under this visa type.

Must Return Home After

This visa is temporary. Students are expected to return to their home country on completion of the exchange. It does not lead to permanent residence.

Requirements

What You Will Need to Apply

Documents required for an exchange student visa application can vary depending on your home country and the exchange programme, but the following are typically needed.

Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in New Zealand, plus at least three months beyond your planned departure date.

Programme Acceptance Letter

Official confirmation from your approved exchange organisation confirming your placement, programme dates, and host family details.

School Enrolment Confirmation

A letter from the New Zealand state school confirming enrolment for the duration of the exchange programme.

Parental Consent

As exchange students are typically minors, signed parental or guardian consent is required as part of the visa application.

Medical & Health Insurance

You must have comprehensive travel and medical insurance for the duration of your stay. Some exchange programmes include this; others require you to arrange it separately.

Medical Certificate (if required)

Depending on your home country and the length of your stay, INZ may require a medical certificate or chest X-ray certificate.

The Process

How We Help You Get Ready

We lodge the student visa application with Immigration New Zealand on your behalf and handle all correspondence with INZ during processing.

Once approved, we walk you through the visa conditions and what to expect on arrival. We are also available throughout your stay if any immigration questions arise.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa for a short exchange visit?

It depends on your home country. Some nationalities can visit New Zealand visa-free for up to three months. However, if you are enrolling in a school or studying, a student visa is required regardless of the length of stay.

Can I choose any school for my exchange year?

The school placement is usually arranged by your exchange organisation, not by you directly. INZ requires enrolment at a state or state-integrated school for the exchange student visa.

Can I work while on an exchange student visa?

Exchange student visas generally do not include work rights. The purpose of the visa is study and cultural exchange, not employment. If you have questions about specific conditions, we can advise based on your situation.

What happens if my exchange programme is extended?

If your programme is extended, you may need to apply for a new student visa or variation of conditions. Contact us as early as possible — visa extensions need to be lodged before your current visa expires.

My exchange organisation said I do not need a visa. Is that correct?

Not always. Exchange organisations sometimes give incorrect advice about visa requirements. We recommend getting a professional immigration assessment before travelling — the cost of advice is far less than the cost of being turned away at the border.

Can my parents visit me during my exchange year?

Yes. Parents and family members can visit New Zealand as tourists. Depending on their nationality, they may need a visitor visa. We can advise on visitor visa options if needed.
